Historically, the potato chip was a simple idea to execute. People were already using potato chips to make french fries, and the only different thing anyone did in order to make potato chips, was cut it thinner. Herman Lay, first bought a small store in Nashville Tennessee and began selling the bags of potato chips (made by a company in Atlanta Georgia) for a profit. Once he made enough money, he then BOUGHT that Georgia company, and made Lay’s, the brand we know today. In the early 1900’s, two other factories and companies began selling potato chips in individual bags: Earl Wise, Sr. who was trying to use his leftover potatoes, and Bill and Salie Utz who began selling Hanover chips (also make the flavored pretzels.)
